What was your first experience with viruses?

I remember my first experience dealing with viruses, was back when I had a windows 98 PC. I was probably 12 at the time, and I got onto a site I probably should not have been on. But, I was and in turn, it resulted in viruses getting access to my PC.

We ended up getting this nasty popup whenever the PC started that showed obscene material. My parents didn’t know what was going on, so I lied and said someone hacked the computer. Some guy came in and re-installed Windows for us. But I remember being very embarrassed about it.

What was your first experience with PC viruses, malware and other such things?

I don’t remember the first but I remember when one made my CD-ROM open and close and play music in the background.

Viruses had the prank vibe back in the day vs the take your money and fraud your identify of today lol

Interestingly enough, never had that issue, my PC from back in Windows 95 ran an antivirus. Back then we ran Norton.

Also my brother and I learned pretty early how to format the PC and reinstall Windows. He could do it starting with Win 95, I think I was able to do it starting with Win 98SE or Windows 2000. Our approach to any any slow down of the computer, often was to reformat it and reinstall everything.

While it wasn’t my first experience, I remember losing a computer to a virus while I had Norton installed. When I loaded the backup, I didn’t re-load Norton and moved to a free anti-virus. Because if the paid version wasn’t going to work, might as well use a free one.

Norton later tried to charge me a renewal fee after I’d confirmed the account was canceled. Thankfully that was a short phone conversation to fix.

My sister played a game that was really well known for having a virus. It ATE our DOS. I noticed that checking Sympanec for updates wasn’t taking as long and that scans were the same length of time even though downloads were happening daily and adding to the hard drives.. I’d download definitions and scanned everytime I used it and so would Mom but she thought it was unnecessary to wait that 30 minutes and she wanted to listen to the same darn music videos over and over right away so she’d start loading them right away and play around with other stuff open the whole time and not manage to open any video media by the time her time was up because she opened too much and nothing could load with 6-8 full music videos coming down on dial up over 6 hours. She needed to only have two and leave them alone but wouldn’t listen to us. Messenger and email plus I guess that game. Found out the hard way while reading a book. She criticized me for doing research with the computer instead of entertaining myself. “You know, like playing that cool new game everyone is talking about!” Groan.
